Intro West NileReturn to index of stories... |
If you've been outside at all this spring - chances are you've been bitten by a mosquito. Unless, of course, you were smart enough to wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt and bug repellant. These days mosquito bites aren't just annoying - they can transmit the West Nile Virus. Dr. Jose Montero - chief of disease control - was kind enough to leave his bug free office and meet us in the woods to talk about protecting ourselves from mosquito bites. And we want to stress the word " kind " because he wasn't wearing any bug spray - and as you'll see, it didn't take the mosquitos very long to find him. |
West NileReturn to index of stories... |
Dr. Montero goes over the following questions on West Nile Virus. What is west nile? The symptoms of west nile. How west nile effects lowered immune systems. What people should do before they head outside. Is deet the most effective way to prevent bites? |
Intro MosquitosReturn to index of stories... |
How much do you really know about mosquitoes? Two years ago we found expert - a professor of zoology at UNH who specializes in knowing just about everything there is to know about the stinging pests. |

Intro BearsReturn to index of stories... |
Bugs aren't alone when it comes to the things that can present a problem during the spring and summer months. There are also bears - although they're exciting to watch - the thrill can be gone quickly - if they're destroying your backyard birdfeeder. |

If your plans have you heading outdoors this weekend and you want to avoid bears, how about taking a trip to medieval times? What can you expect when you get there? Chip Neal takes us to a gathering of the Society of Creative Anachronism. The February event was billed as a medieval Market Day at Birka and it included everything from belly dancing to armored combat contests. |

SCA Chip Neal visits a gathering of the Society of Creative Anachronism where 1500 people in medeval costumns play the roles of middle ages characters in the setting of a market day at Birka, an eighth century swedish settlement. We see clothes and jewelry as well as armor for sale. Their was belly dancing and armored combat and fencing as well as music and a Queen to be knelt down to whenever she passed by. The Society for Creative Anachronism is a world-wide organization started in California back in the 1960's dedicated to creating an anachronism by bringing the medeval times up to the present. |

If you want to experience The revelry of Creative Anachronism for yourself you can attend the "Baronial Investiture at Mid-Summer Faire" this weekend at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds. For more information visit their web site at east kingdom - dot - org. By the way if you're planning to buy armor for the occasion you'll need to plan ahead: a top of the line set of armor could cost around $2000. |
